The study began in 1991 and one part was terminated early in 2002 after an increase was seen in breast cancer, stroke, heart disease and blood clots in women taking the hormone therapy that was offered by the study.
The problem was not that the deficient hormone were replaced, but what they were replaced with and how that was given to them. The WHI used completely synthetic hormones that included conjugated equine (horse) urine estrogens and synthetic progestins (not progesterone that humans have in their body. Progestins have a different molecular structure than progesterone. It is note worthy to say that these are the same hormones used in oral contraceptives in women. another issue is that they are referred to as ‘progesterone’ by conventional doctors and on the internet and other information resources when they are not progesterone, they are progestin, different compound!
Another problem with the hormones used in the WHI is the route they were given. Not only were the estrogen given synthetic conjugated equine (horse) estrogens derived from horse urine, they were administered orally which increases inflammation. Inflammation is one of the main culprits behind disease, including cardiovascular disease. When natural bio-identical estrogen is given through the skin, it does not increase inflammation and even lowers inflammation in those who are deficient.
