Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Diagnosis & Elimination

If you experience bloating, abdominal distention even on occasion or have been told you have irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) the likelihood if inflammation and bacterial abnormality in your intestines is very high. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth occurs when bacteria overgrow in your small intestine and not only cause symptoms such as bloating, constipation or loose stool, but can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies, autoimmune disease, thyroid disease and correlate with other chronic diseases.

Anything that slows down digestion or disrupts your gut health can cause SIBO, including hypothyroidism, poor digestion, poor diet, medications, antacids, antibiotics as some causes.

The bacteria grow and multiply in the small intestine, feeding off sugars, carbohydrates, alcohol and undigested food, and cause fermentation which causes gas.

This results in bloating, abdominal distention and or gas. However, it’s not just digestive issues. SIBO can lead to a wide array of issues from skin rashes and vitamin deficiencies to thyroid and other autoimmune disorders.

It’s important to recognize symptoms and make sure you have the correct testing done to identify SIBO and begin to treat it.

Some symptoms to look for are any amount of bloating, even a small amount of bloating is abnormal, although SIBO can cause severe bloating in some people, a diagnosis of IBS, a chronic disease diagnosis like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, diabetes or other, food intolerances, rosacea, vitamin B12, D, Zinc or Magnesium deficiency, and abnormal bowel habits like diarrhea or constipation or both.

There are multiple tests that can help diagnose SIBO and help gear treatment. Treating SIBO is known to be more difficult and most all patients who are treated conventionally still come out positive on follow up testing. A functional medicine approach is key to successful treatment of SIBO.

This is one of my areas of top specialty and success using patient focused multi-factorial approach that addresses bacterial overgrowth, digestion, inflammation, toxins, nutrients, cell health, diet and lifestyle and successfully addresses SIBO and heals associated problems including leaky gut.
